The Best of Hampton Roads:
  Suffolk, VA

One of the "Seven Cities" of Hampton Roads, the city of Suffolk is located on the area commonly referred to as the Southside. By area, it is the largest of the Seven Cities of Hampton Roads, and the largest independent city in land-area in the entire Commonwealth, but Suffolk has the smallest population of all the seven cities. Suffolk was founded by English colonists in 1742 as a port town on the Nansemond River in the Virginia Colony. Peanuts grown in the surrounding areas became a major industry for Suffolk. Notably, Planters' Peanuts was established in Suffolk beginning in 1912. Suffolk was the 'birthplace' of Mr. Peanut, the mascot of Planters' Peanuts. The city holds an annual festival in honor of this bountiful crop.
